After setting the Zimbabwe Cricket boardroom and academy buildings on fire, his international career seemed over. He is a very fine batsman, probably the best in the country. He has a Test century to his name, and plays up the order. In 2007-08 he played for Old Hararians as their captain. Old Hararians didn't make it to the National League in 2008-09, so Vermeulen moved to Royal Cricket Club. In early 2009, Ozias Bvute indicated that Vermeulen deserved second chance and it now seems likely that he will make the unlikeliest of comebacks.
