Comprehensive list of Zimbabwean players

Below is a comprehensive list of players currently playing cricket in Zimbabwe. It is possible I have missed some players, so if you would like to offer a suggestion or point out a correction, please do email me using the email address listed at the bottom of the homepage.

Names are arranged in alphabetical order by surname.

Gary Brent
Teams: Zimbabwe, Southerns, Harare Sports Club
Gary Brent is the oldest member of the Zimbabwe squad, in his early 30's. He has lost a lot of his pace, but is still an accurate, nagging medium pace bowler, at times very Glenn McGrath-esque. His performances in the ICC World Twenty20 are examples of this. He captained Southerns in the Logan Cup in 2007, and is the national team vice captain. He is a more than capable batsman, with a First Class century to his name. He scored an unbeaten 59 against South Africa in 2007, a game in which he won the man of the match award. He is a core member of the Zimbabwe squad.

Sikandar Raza Butt
Teams: Northerns
Like his Northerns team mate Sad Khan, Sikandar Raza was born in the Punjab state in Pakistan before emigrating to Zimbabwe. There is some speculation that Zimbabwe Cricket brought over Raza and Khan from Pakistan to add more depth to the Logan Cup squads. Raza, unlike his Pakistani teammate, had moderate success, including a score of 84.

Ryan Butterworth
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Old Hararians
By spectators, he was deemed to be Zimbabwe's best player never to have been selected for any national representative sides. His big opportunity came in 2007 for Zimbabwe A against Easterns in the SAA Provincial tournament. He made 0 and 2. He continues to rack up the centuries in the National League though for Old Hararians. At age 26, he still has a Zimbabwe career ahead of him. Should he get selected to play for Zimbabwe, he will probably be the most experienced player, of recent times, to get a call up. I think he should get a call up.

Victor Chaitezvi
Teams: Old Hararians
A very talented allrounder who has represented Zimbabwe at age group level, Victor Chaitezvi has played just one First Class match - for Mashonaland in the 2004-05 Logan Cup. He was 12th man for seven other Logan Cup matches that season, because of prolific run scoring at schools level - he averaged 132 and scored one double century, three centuries and two fifties and was awarded Zimbabwe's best schools batsman that year. In the final he scored 84 from 39 balls to secure his teams victory. A former under-19's captain, he is still very young, so will most likely play a lot more First Class cricket in the coming years for his home side, the Northerns. At the moment he plays National League club cricket for Old Hararians. He was born in Chinhoyi. Victor was interviewed by brmtaylor.com in November 2007, to read the article go to
http://www.brmtaylor.com/news-30.html.

Nyasha Chari
Teams: Old Hararians
One of the older players in Zimbabwe cricket, at age 27, Chari has not played First Class cricket since the 2003-04 season. He represented Old Hararians in the Vigne Cup in 2007.

Eric Chauluka
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Takashinga
A Zimbabwe A mainstay, Chauluka has not quite made it into the national team. He is a promising top order batsman, but not quite good enough yet to make it into a top order consisting of Vusi Sibanda, Brendan Taylor, Chamu Chibhabha and Tatenda Taibu.

Chamu Chibhabha
Teams: Zimbabwe, Takashinga
ODI Shirt: 33
Chibhabha is best as a number three batsman, having had most of his success in that position. He has not played any Test matches, having become a main part of the Zimbabwe ODI team after their self imposed Test suspension. His highest First Class score is 103.

Elton Chigumbura
Teams: Zimbabwe, Africa XI, Northerns, Takashinga
ODI Shirt: 47
Elton Chigumbura was fast-tracked into the Test team at a young age due to the exodus of the leading white players. He is a good fast bowler, perhaps the fastest in Zimbabwe with Anthony Ireland now playing for Gloustershire. He is also a very good lower middle order batsman, and can really turn it on should the situation warrant it. He has now become an automatic selection in the Zimbabwe team, and was even selected for the Africa XI in 2007, where he performed very well.

Tendai Chisoro
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Southerns, Takashinga
Chisoro made his First Class debut for Zimbabwe A against Bangladesh A at a time when personnel for the Zimbabwe squad was at an all time low. He is a more than useful tailender, but he is a talented medium pace bowler, particularly in the limited overs game.

Robertson Chinyengetere
Teams: Uprising, Masvingo and Zimbabwe A
A top order batsmen who starts slowly but surely. He has played for the Zimbabwe A side against Bangladesh. He had the third best average in the 2008 edition of the Logan Cup. In the just ended Super League matches he played only one game and scored an unbeaten 86. He is also a capable medium slow seam bowler and can easily fit into any team. However his major weakness is lapse of concentration when batting that's why he has failed to turn his scores above 60 into hundreds. Robertson practicing law for the past 2 years.

Jemton Chinyengetere
Teams: Uprising, Masvingo, Zimbabwe A
Jemton is a very good opening batsmen. During the last Logan Cup he did not perform well unlike what he did in the previous edition where he scored 98 and 81 in the first game of the tournament. Just like his elder brother he gets over exicited after scoring 50s and has a tendency to throw away his wicket. He should also work on his shot selection as he plays too many shots that make himself vulnerable to lose his wicket. He can also bowl medium pace and generates good pace. Played against Sri Lanka A and did not score much as he was made to bat down the order.

Innocent Chinyoka
Teams: Uprising, Midlands
A very good allrounder if not the best all rounder in the country. Should have made his national team debut a long time ago but had been sidelined for indiscipline. Has played for the Zimbabwe A sides and was a once a member of the CFX Cricket Academy

Collins Chitaka
Teams: Old Hararians
A talented artist from Harare who enjoys making sculptures, Collins Chitaka's cricketing highlight came when he scored 40 for the Old Hararians against the Old Malvernians in the PG Timbers Vigne Cup tournament of 2007.

Charles Coventry
Teams: Zimbabwe, Westerns
One of Zimbabwe's finest young players, his First Class debut in 1998 came by mistake, when he was in the right place at the right time when a Matabeleland player pulled out just before the match. Word has it that Coventry took his gear on the day "just in case it was needed"! He has played for Zimbabwe on several occasions, and is talented enough to be in the starting eleven. He had a falling out with former coach Kevin Curran that saw him left out of the World Cup squad. He played for Westerns in the 2007 Logan Cup with a high degree of success, including several high scores, leading many to believe that maybe he isn't quite finished with Zimbabwe cricket.

Graeme Cremer
Teams: Zimbabwe, Northerns, Harare Sports Club
Cricinfo.com say Graeme Cremer is not the next wrist spin genius. I have to disagree. He is Zimbabwe's most reliable Test spin bowler, apart from perhaps Ray Price. He was thrown into the Test arena at just age 18, and yet he managed to hold his own. He did average 45 with the ball, but did take 13 wickets from 6 Tests. At a time when Zimbabwe was doing very poorly, this was quite an achievement. For mine, he is an automatic selection when Zimbabwe return to Test matches. He scored 171 not out in one Logan Cup match, and has been useful with the bat on several occasions since then, suggesting he has been working on his batting technique. He averages mid 30's in domestic one day matches, and has yet to play an ODI.

Keith Dabengwa
Teams: Zimbabwe, Westerns, Queens Sports Club
Keith Dabengwa is a left arm orthodox bowling allrounder who has had limited opportunities in the national side, and as a result has been unable to play an innings of substance or bowl at an average under 4 in an international match. He has however been very good at domestic level. The 7/1 he took in a 2007 Logan Cup match is the best bowling figures ever by anyone to take 7 wickets in an innings in First Class history.

Terry Duffin
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe A, Westerns, Queens Sports Club
Terry Duffin is one of few Zimbabweans to have scored a half century on Test debut. At one time he was the national cricket captain, but was dropped in favour of Prosper Utseya. He scored well in the 2007 Logan Cup for Westerns, with a highest score of 96. He is performing reasonably well in the SAA Provincial tournament, which means he may be making a comeback to the national team. Come Zimbabwe's return to Test cricket, it remains to be seen whether Duffin will find a spot in the team.

Craig Ervine
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Old Hararians, Bexhill (England)
One of the more talented players in the Zimbabwe domestic circuit, he is highly regarded by Zimbabwe Cricket. He is a batting allrounder that has consistently been overlooked for selection, with his last meaningful game time coming against Bangladesh A for Zimbabwe A in 2004-05. He has now set his sights on playing county cricket. He is an athletic fielder, and the brother of Sean and Ryan Ervine. He is a qualified coach at just age 21.

Ryan Ervine
Teams: Old Hararians, Buxton (England)
A superb allrounder who can do the job with both bat and ball. As an opening bowler, he has a nagging accuracy, and as a batsman he has scored many centuries. He plays club cricket for Buxton in England and Old Hararians in the Zimbabwe National League. Ryan is the youngest of the Ervine brothers.

Trevor Garwe
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Takashinga
The most exciting fast bowling prospect in Zimbabwe, Garwe is a mainstay in the Zimbabwe A side. Despite many good performances, he has, perhaps unfairly, never been selected for the Zimbabwe ODI team. He utilizes swing and has some pace. He is more suited to the longer version of the game, and could be a surprise selection when Zimbabwe return to Test cricket.

Simbarashe Gupo
Teams: Centrals, Kwekwe Sports Club
A young specialist batsman, Gupo needs to work a lot more on his batting. He averaged just 15 in the 2007 Logan Cup.

Kelvin Gwesere
Teams: Old Malvernians
A good bowler at club cricket level, Kelvin Gwesere took a 5 wicket haul against Mabvuku in the PG Timbers Vigne Cup competition.

H Harineki
Teams: Old Hararians
A relative unknown on the Zimbabwe club cricket scene, his only known bowling figures are 3/54 for Old Hararians against Old Malvernians in 2007.

Ryan Higgins
Teams: Zimbabwe, Winsley Cricket Club (England)
Higgins debuted in ODI's at just 18 years of age. He is a very promising legspin bowler, in a country with so many promising spin bowlers it's not funny. He did remarkably well in his first stint in the ODI team, taking 13 wickets in 11 games at 29.23, with an economy of just over 4. He hasn't played club cricket in Zimbabwe in the 2007-08 season, nor did he play in the 2007 Logan Cup. He did however go to England to play for Winsley in the Wiltshire cricket league, where he topped the batting averages with 62.40.

Douglas Hondo
Teams: Zimbabwe, Takashinga
Hondo quit Zimbabwe cricket due to an order to shave his dreadlocks. A talented pace bowler, he now plays for Takashinga in the National League. With 9 Tests and 56 ODI's under his belt, he was a massive loss to the team, but he always struggled in international cricket, with both his bowling averages in this mid 30's.

Tinashe Hove
Teams: Westerns
At one stage Hove seemed to be on the fringes of the national team, after opening many innings for Zimbabwe A. But averaging under 20 in First Class cricket, he fell out of favour with the national selectors, and now is purely a domestic player for the Westerns.

Leroy James
Teams: Emakhandeni
An unknown player from the Bulawayo district in Zimbabwe. He is believed to be a bowler, having taken 3 wickets in one match against Queens Sports Club in the Bulawayo League in 2007.

Philemon Kadzitye
Teams: Takashinga
A front line pace bowler who likes to open the bowling for his club.

Friday Kasteni
Teams: Zimbabwe, Africa XI, Royal Cricket Club
A surprise selection for the Zimbabwe squad in the 2007 World Cup, he was exposed at ODI level. He was brought into the team at too young an age. Having said that, he has the potential to be a future number 3 batsman, with a very promising 100 i the Logan Cup for Midlands several years ago. He can bowl left arm spin, albeit if the ball doesn't actually spin, but is primarily a wicket keeper. He was born on a Friday.

Mohammed Sad Khan
Teams: Northerns, Old Hararians
Born in Faisalabad in Pakistan, Sad Khan emigrated to Zimbabwe, one of very few people who do so. He represented Northerns in the 2007 Logan Cup with little success. He is more or less a specialist wicket keeper, who needs to work on his batting.

Joseph Madyembwa
Teams: Northwinds, Uprising
Relatively unknown player in the league. A very good all rounder. Right arm fast bowler and a good hitter of the ball. Helped Uprising against Masvingo in National league game in the 2005/6 season with an unbeaten 69. A very good fielder usually nicknamed Jonty and most of the players in the league admire his style of play. Given the chance and good coaching has the capabilities of making it into the National team. He has to work on his run-up as he bowls too many no-balls. Also in the centre of controversy after ordering plyers from Uprising walk of the pitch after he was racially abused when he was called a "Baboon" that was during the last season in a match against Old Hararians at Old Hararians.

Romeo Madziva
Teams: Mbizo
A relatively unknown bowler from Mbizo whose best recorded bowling performance was 5/15 from in 6.2 overs against Amaveni in the 2007 Midlands Provincial League.

Hamilton Masakadza
Teams: Zimbabwe, Easterns, Takashinga
ODI Shirt: 3
Hamilton Masakadza was for a short while the youngest person to score a Test match century, which he scored against the West Indies in 2001 (this record was later taken by Mohammed Ashraful). Masakadza has become one of the most experienced players in the Zimbabwe squad, and is more at home in the longer format of the game. He plays in the middle order for Zimbabwe, while he is possibly better as a top order batsman.

Shingi Masakadza
Teams: Takashinga
The brother of Hamilton Masakadza, Shingi is a bowler for Takashinga.

Tafadzwa Kamungozi
Teams: Zimbabwe, Takashinga
A left arm finger spinner who tends to be expensive at times, Kamungozi was selected to play in Zimbabwe's inaugural Twenty20 match against the Eagles at Kimberley. He has played several ODI's, and has performed moderately well, averaging a touch over 30. He has been more successful in domestic one-day matches, and is quite likely to play more for Zimbabwe in the future. He would be a good Test match bowler, if he can keep his economy rate down.

Simbarashe Kusano
Teams: Westerns
Having been on the First Class scene for several years, Kusano was one of the Westerns experienced hands during the 2007 domestic season. He is a good lower order batsman in the longer form of the game, but has been an ineffective batsman in the one-day matches. Bowling right arm medium pace is his strong suit, and he has a bowling average in the low 30's in both forms of the game. He has a very good economy rate in one-day cricket, of just above 4 runs an over.

Alexander Mavhiko
Teams: Kwekwe Sports Club A specialist bowler for Kwekwe, his best haul was 4/66 against Harare Sports Club in the 2007 National League encounter.

Tendai Machiri
Teams: Southerns, Takashinga
A very talented offspin bowler, Tendai Machiri could one day make it into the national team. In the 2007 Faithwear Cup, he took 7 wickets at 7.00 apiece. He has a one-day half century to his name, suggesting he could be a potential bowling allrounder.

Blessing Mahwire
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe A, Royal Cricket Club
Blessing Mahwire is a talented bowler who can bat down the order. He is a good at bowling outswing, and he has a bit of pace at his disposal. He has a Test half-century and a First Class century to his name. He captained the Zimbabwe A side in the SAA Provincial matches after Tino Mawayo was suspended for disciplinary reasons. Despite falling out of favour with the national selectors, a player of Mahwire's calibre will not be out of the side for too long.

Admire Manyumwa
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Royal Cricket Club
Admire Manyumwa has developed into a very good right arm medium fast bowler in his team with the Zimbabwe A team in the SAA Provincial competition. He averages under 17 with the ball in First Class cricket, the sort of form which could see him in consideration when Zimbabwe return to Test cricket. He is no bunny with the bat. He has a First Class half-century to his name.

Alester Maregwede
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe A, Takashinga
A very talented wicket-keeper batsman who has been forced out of the national team due to the rise of Brendan Taylor and the return of Tatenda Taibu. After Tino Mawayo's successful 2007 Logan Cup campaign, Maregwede is now the 4th choice wicket keeper. Apart from the occasional appearance for Zimbabwe A, he is now strictly a domestic player. Having made his debut in 1997, this makes him the most experienced non-international player on the domestic scene. He averages less than 25 in First Class cricket, and his only hope of returning to the national team is if he starts scoring runs as a specialist batsman.

Brendon Marsh
Teams: Westerns
Based in Bulawayo, Marsh is a true fast bowler, Marsh was unlucky not to get a game in the Logan Cup, despite being part of the Westerns Logan Cup squad. He played all Faithwear Cup matches, but was unfortunate not to take any wickets.

Timycen Maruma
Teams: Zimbabwe, Easterns, Takashinga
Frighteningly good at domestic level, with 50 First Class wickets from 12 matches between 2006 and 2007, Maruma was selected for the ODI side too early, and failed to impress, conceding 0/74 from his 2 matches against South Africa in Ausgust 2007. A bit of a swing-at-everything slogger, he can sometimes be a useful lower order batsman.

Johnson Marumisa
Teams: Easterns, Takashinga
Supposed to be the biggest hitter in Zimbabwe, although I think that title should go to Elton Chigumbura, Marumisa was a surprise selection for the Twenty20 World Cup due to his big hitting reputation. He didn't get a game, but he was part of the squad that made history against Australia. He has one First Class century to his name. He played for Mashonaland in the Logan Cup from 2003-04 until 2007, when the competition was re-formatted. He now represents Easterns.

Tendayi Mashonganyika
Teams: Harare Sports Club
Thrown into the deep end for Mashonaland in the 2006 Faithwear Cup, sadly, with an average of 15.50 he was one of their best batsmen. He didn't play any provincial cricket in 2007, and is learning the ropes at Harare Sports Club.

Taurai Matikwa
Teams: Alexandra Sports Club
A bowler for Alexandra Sports Club. Best known figures are 4/30 against Takashinga 2.

Stewart Matsika
Teams: Zimbabwe Under-19s, Takashinga
A promising bowler for Takashinga 2, who has been noticed by the selectors, and was rewarded with a place in the national under 19's squad for a South African tour at the end of 2007.

Tino Mawoyo
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe A, Easterns, Harare Sports Club
Mawoyo was the leading run scorer in the Logan Cup for Easterns in 2007. He is an extremely capable batsman, who is sure to get more opportunities at the top level in years to come. He only has one First Class century, but don't let that fool you, he is an extremely skillful player. He has played 2 ODI's, filling in for Brendan Taylor as wicket keeper. He has a strong future in Zimbabwe cricket.

Mark Mbofana
Teams: Harare Sports Club
A capable batsman who turned out for Harare Sports Club in 2007. He scored 52 in one game against Takashinga.

Thabo Mboyi
Teams: Westerns, Queens Sports Club
A reasonable allrounder, Thabo Mboyi needs to concentrate on either batting or bowling. At the moment he is not really excelling at either, although a domestic one-day average of just over 28 suggests that he could work on his medium pace deliveries to become quite a good pace bowler. He scored 88 in a club match in 2007 batting down the order, which suggests he could be trying just that.

Keegan Meth
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe A, Harare Sports Club
Perhaps even more unknown than Piet Rinke when he joined the Zimbabwe side in 2006, he did surprisingly well. In his 3 innings, he made one half-century and averaged nearly 25. His ODI debut was also his List A debut, and this came 6 months before his First Class debut. He is a more than useful medium pace bowler who can swing the ball, and in particular he troubled the Northerns batsmen in the SAA Provincials in 2007.

Solomon Mire
Teams: Centrals, Royal Cricket Club
Without a doubt, Solomon Mire has the highest average of any player in domestic one day cricket in Zimbabwe, with 115.00, including 3 half centuries. He didn't quite have the same success in the Logan Cup matches, but is almost certainly going to represent Zimbabwe at some point during his career. A handy medium pace bowler as well, capable of bowling a couple of decent spells in both forms of the game.

Alex Mlambo
Teams: Old Hararians
Believed to be a relative of Harare coach Donald Mlambo, Alex is a left arm seamer who can be damaging at times. He now has a rejuvenated action, after having to remodel it.

Tafadzwa Mufambisi
Teams: Zimbabwe, Northerns, Old Hararians
One of many wicket keeper batsmen in Zimbabwe, Mufambisi has dropped down the pecking order, struggling to get selected even for Northern's Logan Cup matches. He has been found wanting at international level, averaging just over 9 in 6 ODI's. At just 20, time is on his side, and it is quite possible he will play many games for Zimbabwe over the next 10 years.

Silent Mujaji
Teams: Easterns, Mutare Sports Club
In the same mould as Steady Musoso, Silent Mujaji is a genuine pace bowler who has the tendency to be expensive in one day matches. In Logan Cup cricket he has been near exceptional, averaging just over 16 and conceding less than 2.5 an over. With no genuine quick bowlers in the Zimbabwean squad, he could be promoted sooner rather than later.

T Mukoki
Teams: Old Malvernians
An unknown player on the club cricket scene, all that is known about T Mukoki is that he took 4/42 against Old Hararians in a PG Timbers Vigne Cup match in 2007.

Tawanda Mupariwa
Teams: Zimbabwe, Bulawayo Athletic Club
Mupariwa has proven to be a reliable bowler for Zimbabwe, but lacks pace. Perhaps his most famous moment came not as a bowler, but as a batsman during the 3rd ODI between Zimbabwe and Bangladesh and Harare, when his 33 run contribution to a partnership with Brendan Taylor helped to secure a nail-biting victory.

Steady Musoso
Teams: Easterns, Mutare Sports Club
Primarily a genuine quick bowler, Musoso is expensive, and hasn't taken quite as many wickets as he should have considering his pace. I'm sure he will continue to be selected for Easterns.

David Mutendera
Teams: Zimbabwe, Harare Sports Club
His Zimbabwe days are well and truly behind him, his last ODI having been played in 2001, and his career hampered by injury. He is a very tall man, at nearly 200cm, which gave him good pace and bounce, but his offcutter was his most threatening delivery. It was good to see him take the field for Harare Sports Club in the 2007 National League.

Forster Mutizwa
Teams: Easterns, Takashinga
Mutizwa is a part-time wicket keeper who has had to take the gloves on a more regular basis in recent times. Playing for Mashonaland since 2003-04, he was an occasional offbreak bowler, but has had to put this on the backburner. He played for Easterns in the winning 2007 double. He rose to prominance when he scored a century in the 2007 Logan Cup, only one of a handful of people to do so.

Taurai Muzarabani
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Centrals
A player that could work on his consistency, Taurai Muzarabani is a medium pace bowler. A bunny with the bat, he is a decent bowler who averages just over 30 in First Class cricket. He is playing in the Zimbabwe A side for the SAA Provincials.

Sammy Mwakayeni
Teams: Takashinga
Sammy Mwakayeni is a skilled top order batsman who's best innings to date was 93 for Takashinga 1 in the PG Timbers Vigne Cup Highfield derby in 2007-08.

Abraham Nare
Teams: Emakhandeni
Believed to have been born in Lesotho, Abraham Nare is a bowler who plays for Emakhandeni Cricket Club.

Tafadzwa Ngulube
Teams: Bulawayo Athletic Club
A wicket-keeper batsman, his career highlight would be being selected for Matabeleland in the 2006 Faithwear Cup. In 2007, he played club cricket for Bulawayo Athletic Club in the National League.

Khawulani Ntuli
Teams: Westerns
Khawulani Ntuli is a young allrounder who originates from Bulawayo. He has a tendancy to be quite an expensive bowler, and needs to work on keeping his economy rate under 5 an over. He is quite a good batsman, averaging 37 in the Faithwear Cup, although he needs to increase his strike rate in one day matches

Steven Nyamuzinga
Teams: Zimbabwe A, Easterns, Royal Cricket Club
Steven Nyamuzinga is a promising allrounder who can turn it on with the bat if the situation requires it. He has a First Class century to his name. He has also taken wickets at a good average in the SAA Provincial competition. He is a nagging medium pace bowler, who could work on his economy in the one-day format.

Remembrance Nyathi
Teams: Centrals, Kwekwe Sports Club
Debuting for Midlands in 2006 and playing for the Centrals in Zimbabwe domestic cricket in 2007, Remembrance Nyathi is an exciting prospect for Zimbabwe due to his allround ability. His offbreaks netted him 13 wickets from 4 games in the 2007 Logan Cup, while he scored an unbeaten half-century in the same tournament.

John Nyumbu
Teams: Westerns
A true tail ender, John Nyumbu is a handy offspin bowler, who had reasonable success in the 2007 Logan Cup, including one five wicket haul of 5/42.

Washington Nzira
Teams: Kwekwe Sports Club
Washington Nzira is a very good batsman, who could get opportunities in the national team in years to come. His biggest achievement to date is being 13th man for Midlands against Matabeleland in 2003. He now plays for Kwekwe Sports Club in the Midlands Provincial League, and was the first Midlands player to score a century in season 2007.

Tinashe Panyangara
Teams: Zimbabwe, Barkisland Cricket Club (England)
Panyangara was a very skillful bowling allrounder, one of the few in Zimbabwe with genuine pace. He was well known for his refreshingly enthusiastic celebrations after taking a wicket. Unfortunately, he was injury prone, and has dropped off the Zimbabwe cricket radar for quite some time. He applied to be a part of an Indian academy several seasons ago. More recently, he played club cricket in England for Barkisland. It is believed he wants to make a return to Zimbabwe cricket, but not confirmed.

Chris Phiri
Teams: Westerns, Bulawayo Athletic Club
While primarily the BAC coach, he took the field in one game after Charles Coventry refused to play. He also made his List A debut for Westerns in the 2007 Faithwear Cup. He batted at number eleven as a specialist batsman, and was run out for 3 runs. He did not bowl.

Ray Price
Teams: Zimbabwe, Worcestershire, Harare Sports Club
Price has been on the scene for many years, debuting in 1995 for the Mashonaland Country Districts. He is a world class left-arm orthodox bowler, having proven himself at Test level. He hasn't had so much success at ODI level, but after several years playing for Worcestershire, he made himself available again for Zimbabwe, where he will look to rectify his poor ODI record. Like most Zimbabwean bowlers, he is a very handy lower order batsman, with an unbeaten First Class century to his name.

Ed Rainsford
Teams: Zimbabwe, Centrals, Kadoma Sports Club, Harefield Cricket Club (England)
Ed Rainsford is one of the quickest bowlers in Zimbabwe, but seems to have fallen out of favour with the selectors, having not played an ODI since the 2007 World Cup. He played against the South African Academy team with little success. As an international player in club cricket, he was outstanding on the English club cricket scene, with 33 wickets in 17 matches in 2006, which at one stage included 4 wickets in 4 balls. Despite an outstanding 2007 Logan Cup, with 21 wickets at 9.95, he just won't get a look in for the national team.

E Rioga
Teams: Old Hararians
A relative unknown in Zimbabwe cricket, his highest known score is an unbeaten 56 for Harare Sports Club in a loss to Royal Cricket Club.

Piet Rinke
Teams: Zimbabwe, Old Hararians, Remnants (England)
Against poorer opposition, Piet Rinke can be a delight to watch, but against international class opponents he is well and truly exposed. An obscure inclusion in the team in 2006, he didn't last long, and appears to be out of the fray now. He currently plays club cricket for Old Hararians. In July 2007, he turned out for Remnants Cricket Club for their friendly Twenty20 match against the Hart-McLeod XI.

Brian Sanyika
Teams: Takashinga, Royal Cricket Club
Sanyika is a bowler who played for both Royal Cricket Club but later transferred to Takashinga in the 2007-08 club cricket season.

Vusi Sibanda
Teams: Zimbabwe, Africa XI, Old Hararians
Vusi Sibanda is an attacking opener who has become a vital part of the Zimbabwe lineup. After a lot of mixing and matching, the Zimbabwe selectors have found an ideal opening combination in the attacking Sibanda, and the more subdued Brendan Taylor, who can also turn it on if the situation warrants it. Sibanda has a top ODI score of 116 against Bermuda, and was one of Africa's better players in the 2007 Afro-Asia Cup. Sibanda opened in two of the innings and averaged 40.00 in the series.

Tendai Shereni
Teams: Mabvuku
A talented allrounder who has yet to make the progression from club cricket to First Class cricket. Sherini made 97 not out in one match against Takashinga 2 and 59 against Glenshire. In that match against Glenshire, he took 4/21 from 10 overs.

Gregory Strydom
Teams: Zimbabwe, Westerns, Queens Sports Club
A good domestic player, his success for his province never translated to success batting for Zimbabwe. A player who had the ability to slog at will, Strydom played a dozen ODI's for Zimbabwe, and averaged less than 15, leading to his dismissal from the side. He captained Westerns during the 2007 Faithwear Cup, but did not play any Logan Cup games. He scored a century in the final of the National League B Division for Queens Sports Club.

Tatenda Taibu
Teams: Zimbabwe, Namibia, Africa XI, Takashinga
ODI Shirt: 44
Tatenda Taibu is considered to be the only world class player in the current Zimbabwe lineup. Primarily a wicket keeper, he is a top order batsman who consistently scores well in the First Class arena, although of late he has been useful in 50-over matches as well. He scored his maiden ODI century against South Africa in 2007.

Freedom Takarusenga
Teams: Westerns, Bulawayo Athletic Club
Freedom Takarusenga has had a very successful career since taking up the sport in 2000. In 2001 he was voted man of the tournament in the Western schools cricket tournament, after winning five additional man of the match awards. In the last few years, Freedom has been coaching a lot more, and he wants to do more to help the development of cricket in Bulawayo. In 2001 he trained with the national team, bowling to the batsmen. He was accepted in to the United Cricket Academy of Australia, but unfortunately wasn't able to attend. He currently plays for Bulawayo Athletic Club and has had an extremely successful season in 2007 with his left-arm orthodox spinners. Read Brmtaylor.com's interview with Freedom from late 2007.

Brendan Taylor
Teams: Zimbabwe, Harare Sports Club
ODI Shirt Number: 1
Brendan Taylor is the most exciting product of Zimbabwe cricket in recent times, and is known for his cool head in pressure situations. His rise to fame came when he smashed 60 not out and kept wicket perfectly in a Zimbabwe shock win over Australia. Taylor hit 4 off the penultimate ball to secure victory. This is not the first time he won the game off his own bat though. Against Bangladesh in 2006, Taylor hit a six off the final ball of the match to lead Zimbabwe to a victory, and ultimately, their first series win in several years. Brendan Taylor, in my opinion, is best as an opening batsman, with Vusi Sibanda at the other end. Having said that, he averages over 40 batting at number 4. He has played 10 Test matches. Averaging 56.00 in Twenty20 Internationals, he has the highest Twenty20 International average of any player to have played more than one match (Taylor is 2nd overall, Bangladesh's Junaid Siddique averages 71.00 from 1 match).

Alois Tichana
Teams: Northerns, Royal Cricket Club
At times, a very good batsman, but was one of many Mashonaland youngsters thrown into the provincial team during the 2006 club disputes. He was the cause of much controversy in 2007, when Graeme Cremer refused to play in a game Tichana was captaining because he was incapable of "setting fields for his bowling". Tichana needs to work more on his batting, but this will get better as he gets more experienced. He is a decent offspinner, with bowling averages in both forms of the game in the low 20's.

Adam Tom
Teams: Mbizo
As a right hand batsman, Adam Tom was selected for a Zimbabwe A squad at a time when supply of cricketers was at an all time low in 2006. He represented Midlands in the Logan Cup in the 2003-04 season. His latest recorded appearance came in the Midlands Provincial League in 2007 for Mbizo, when he scored 69 against Amaveni.

Matthew Tore
Teams: Mabvuku
Not a lot is known of Matthew Tore. He has not represented either Mashonaland or Northerns in the Logan Cup, and his only recorded appearance in a game of cricket came when he cracked 53 not out against a weak Mabvuku side.

Prosper Utseya
Teams: Zimbabwe, Easterns, Old Hararians, Takashinga
Prosper Utseya is the best spin bowler in Zimbabwe, and is the national cricket captain, after taking over from Terrence Duffin in 2006. Under Utseya, the national team has had its most success in recent times, including a series whitewash of Canada and Bermuda, a series win over Bangladesh and a Twenty20 victory over world champions Australia. Utseya is not a wicket taker, but is extremely economical, which has seen many rate him alongside Tatenda Taibu as a world class player. I think if he can lower his ODI average, currently over 50, then he would be truly world class. He is a reliable lower order batsman - he scored 45 on his Test debut, just 5 runs away from an elite club include Terry Duffin, of Zimbabweans scoring 50's on Test debut. He represented both Old Hararians and Takashinga in 2007-08.

Mark Vermeulen
Teams: Zimbabwe, Old Hararians
He will probably never bat for Zimbabwe again, after setting the Zimbabwe Cricket boardroom and academy buildings on fire. He is however a very fine batsman, and probably only Tatenda Taibu could match him in terms of class. He has a Test century to his name, and plays up the order. Currently, he plays for Old Hararians as their captain. His future remains uncertain.

Roland Vermeulen
Teams: Northerns
Roland Vermeulen was very good at athletics, and even represented Zimbabwe. He made his First Class debut in 2007 for the Northerns at age 31, which by Zimbabwean domestic standards is pension age, and made 17 runs. It is unlikely he will play more First Class cricket. In recent years he has represented Old Hararians.

Matthew Williams
Teams: Westerns, Bulawayo Athletic Club
The brother of Sean Williams, Matthew Williams scored 30 on his First Class debut as a 16 year old. He is an exciting batting prospect for Zimbabwe cricket.

Sean Williams
Teams: Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Under-19s, Harare Sports Club
Possibly Zimbabwe's most talented First Class batsman, Sean Williams was for over a year averaging over 50 in First Class cricket. He now averages high 40's. He is highly regarded by Zimbabwe Cricket, and is best batting at number 4. He is an automatic selection, but with Taibu batting at 4, Williams will have to settle with batting at 5. He is the second allrounder in the team, after Elton Chigumbura. Williams is a batting allrounder, who can bowl left arm orthodox, although of late he seems to be playing as a specialist batsman. He is one of the worlds best and most athletic fielders, with comparisons being made to Michael Clarke when Williams fields at backward point.

Cephas Zhuwawo
Teams: Northerns, Old Malvernians
Zhuwawo had little success at First Class level in 2007, although as the year progressed he had better performances. In a club match he scored a half century, and he made 42 against the touring Sri Lankan A side. In a good allround performance that much, he also took 4/45. Only in his early 20's, time is on his side as far as national selection goes, although he will need to be more consistent and perform well in the Logan Cup.
